L'edizione americana di Vanity Fair pubblica l'ultimo articolo scritto da Christopher Hitchens. Si intitola Charles Dickens's Inner Child ed è una lucida riflessione sull'opera dello scrittore inglese di cui si celebra il bicentenario della nascita. A un certo punto, Hitch individua il messaggio che sta alla base di tutti i romanzi di Dickens:
Whatever you do—hang on to your childhood! He was true to this in his fashion, both in ways that delight me and in ways that do not. He loved the idea of a birthday celebration, being lavish about it, reminding people that they were once unborn and are now launched. This is bighearted, and we might all do a bit more of it.
Più avanti Hitch riflette sull'importanza di Dickens per il mondo in cui viveva. Charles, in altre parole, era davvero potente:
By a few brilliant strokes of the pen, he revived and restored a popular festival and made it into a sort of social solidarity: a common defense against the Gradgrinds and the Bounderbys and the men who had been responsible for the misery of the Hungry Forties.
